Makali Mulu Reveals Reasons Behind Azimio MPs’ Walkout During Affordable Housing Constitution Passage

By: Nicholas Wambua

In a recent parliamentary session, Kitui Central MP Dr. Makali Mulu shed light on the motivations behind the Azimio MPs’ decision to walk out during the passing of the constitution regarding affordable housing and the house levy. Dr. Mulu attributed the walkout to the inadequate time allocated for thorough discussion on the matter.

Dr. Mulu emphasized that the proposed affordable housing initiatives would predominantly benefit individuals with formal employment, potentially burdening the majority of Kenyans who lack regular paychecks. This concern underscores the need for a comprehensive and inclusive approach to housing policies that cater to the diverse needs of the populace.

Moreover, Dr. Mulu raised apprehensions regarding the allocation of public land for private housing developments without clear provisions for compensating the affected landowners. He stressed the significance of addressing these uncertainties to ensure fairness and transparency in land-use policies.

In addition to housing issues, Dr. Mulu addressed the pressing matter of public debt. He proposed practical solutions such as reducing public expenditure, minimizing resource wastage, and combating corruption as crucial steps for the Kenyan government to alleviate the burden of debt on the nation’s economy.

Dr. Mulu’s remarks came during his visit to offer condolences to the family of Musyoka Wa Maiyu in Maai Village, Nguni Ward, Mwingi Central. The heartfelt sendoff served as a poignant reminder of the importance of community solidarity and support during times of grief.

As discussions on housing and fiscal policies continue, Dr. Mulu’s insights underscore the need for robust deliberations and concerted efforts towards addressing the socio-economic challenges facing Kenya.
