The 8 p.m. raid was carried out as part of a 100-day Rapid Results Initiative (RRI) against illicit brews ordered by Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen, following intelligence reports on illegal liquor trade in the county.
Enforcement teams confiscated 290 crates of assorted alcoholic drinks bearing counterfeit Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) stamps, along with several cartons of illicit spirits.
NACADA CEO Dr. Anthony Omerikwa said the syndicate behind the trade runs multiple outlets across Murang’a and has consistently evaded law enforcement.
“This is a well-organized network that continues to thrive on illegality, highlighting the magnitude of the challenge,” Omerikwa said.
Although the main suspect was not present during the raid, a woman believed to be his store manager was arrested and detained at Kahuho Police Station. Authorities have since launched a manhunt for the ringleader.
KRA has taken over investigations, with possible charges expected for tax evasion and violation of the Alcoholic Drinks Control Act (2010). Samples of the seized liquor will be tested by KEBS and the Government Chemist to confirm safety.
NACADA warned that counterfeit alcohol is not only a revenue loss for the country but also a health hazard to consumers. Officials vowed to scale up the crackdown and bring offenders to justice.
