The consultative meeting, which included Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, seven governors, as well as Cabinet Secretaries and Principal Secretaries from the region, focused on development projects for the area.

This meeting comes ahead of the president’s planned development tour of the region next month.

Kahiga, who has been aligning with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s camp, has not provided an explanation for his absence, despite criticism from some leaders in his county.

Mathira MP Eric Wamumbi questioned the governor’s decision to skip the meeting, stressing its importance.

“As a Nyeri resident, I have the right to ask why you missed a meeting called by the head of state to discuss Nyeri’s development…” Wamumbi said.

While the meeting was taking place, the governor was engaged in activities in his county.

“Accompanied by my Deputy David Kinaniri, I officially signed the declaration designating Nyeri County as the official scout city of the world,” he posted on his official pages.

“We then proceeded to Baden Powell Memorial Gardens…” he added.

Sources at State House confirmed that the leaders discussed ongoing regional projects and agreed on new ones to be launched.

“We discussed key programmes and projects aimed at boosting the region’s socio-economic development,” President Ruto mentioned briefly.

The meeting was attended by Ann Waiguru (Kirinyaga), Cecily Mbarire (Embu), Kimani Wamatangi (Kiambu), Isaac Mutuma (Meru), Joshua Irungu (Laikipia), Muthomi Njuki (Tharaka Nithi), Irungu Kangata (Murang’a), and Kiarie Badilisha (Nyandarua).

This meeting followed a similar one on March 20, which brought together elected leaders from the region.

During his tour, the President is expected to address issues affecting tea, coffee, miraa, and milk industries. He will also launch various development projects, including affordable housing and fresh produce markets.

Badilisha noted that the leaders agreed on a framework to meet the people’s expectations and fulfill the promised interventions.

Waiguru echoed these sentiments, stating that they discussed aligning county and national priorities to accelerate development, improve service delivery, and stimulate economic growth in the region.

Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika, who was also expected to attend, is reportedly out of the country.
