Gachagua: Ruto Will Be a One-Term President

Former Deputy President and Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has downplayed the ongoing debate about who will deputise President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election, insisting that the opposition’s main objective is to ensure Ruto serves only one term.

Speaking on Sunday after attending a church service at PCEA Zimmerman, Gachagua led a series of rallies in Nairobi’s Roysambu area, where he said the “united opposition” was finalising a strategy to remove Ruto from office in 2027. He described discussions about the deputy president’s slot as irrelevant at this stage.

Gachagua and his allies also revisited last month’s alleged attack at ACK Witima Church in Othaya, questioning why no arrests had been made despite assurances from Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen and Inspector General Douglas Kanja.

The DCP leader criticised the emerging cooperation between UDA and ODM, arguing that the alliance would not secure the presidency or the deputy presidency in 2027. He maintained that regardless of who is chosen as Ruto’s running mate, the President would complete only one term.

During the rallies, Gachagua urged the Mt Kenya region to remain united, warning that internal divisions could weaken its political influence. He said he had agreed with former Public Service Cabinet Secretary Justin Muturi that the region must speak with one voice and resist efforts to fragment it.

His allies echoed the unity message, cautioning against what they termed schemes to split the region politically.

Gachagua further revealed that the opposition plans to hold zoning negotiations with other political players, including Kalonzo Musyoka, to improve their chances in the 2027 elections, particularly in Nairobi.

He also raised concerns about the voter registration process, calling on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) and the National Registration Bureau to ensure integrity in the issuance of national identity cards.

Gachagua addressed supporters in Roysambu, Githurai 45, and Githurai 44 as he stepped up political mobilisation efforts in the capital.
