Monica Kimani’s Family Speaks Out Ahead of Maribe and Jowie’s Verdict

The family of the late businesswoman Monica Kimani is anticipating closure as they await the High Court’s ruling on her murder case. The High Court is poised to announce its judgment on Friday, February 9, concerning Joseph Irungu, alias Jowie, and former TV news anchor Jacque Maribe, who stand accused of Monica’s murder.

George Kimani, Monica’s brother, has expressed the family’s frustration over the prolonged legal process and hopes that the impending verdict will bring them peace. He stated, “The wait has been lengthy; we’ve been attending court sessions for over five years. We anticipated closure last year to move forward. It’s been challenging, especially for our parents, but we’re coping.”

Originally scheduled for March 15, 2024, the judgment was rescheduled following mutual agreement by the involved parties and will now be delivered tomorrow.

George emphasized the family’s longing for justice, stating, “Justice is our sole desire, as it will provide closure. These past years have been arduous, particularly for our mother, who is deeply affected. We shield her from the distressing reports about my sister, but I believe justice will put an end to this.”

The verdict was previously postponed on several occasions, including due to the illness of Lady Justice Grace Nzioka and Maribe’s reported illness on January 26.

Reflecting on Monica’s character, George described her as a compassionate and diligent individual who was dedicated to helping others. He recounted her significant role in managing the family business in South Sudan and her selflessness in nurturing and supporting her loved ones.

George testified to Monica’s trusting nature, saying, “Her generosity sometimes led her to trust everyone, unable to discern friends from foes.”

Despite recovering some of Monica’s belongings, the family is still awaiting the return of her Ksh. 4 million house in Kiambu almost six years later.

Monica, aged 28 at the time, was tragically murdered in her apartment in the Kilimani area on September 19, 2018. Maribe and Jowie were subsequently charged with her murder on October 15, 2018.
