The institution attributes the staffing surplus to the return of personnel from campuses that were recently granted independent charters, leading to their reintegration into the main campus.

In a memo to staff, Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Administration, Planning, and Strategy, Prof. Loice Maru, stated that the university was undergoing a “Right-Sizing Exercise” due to financial constraints. The process, she noted, complies with Section 40 of the Employment Act, 2007, and the relevant Collective Bargaining Agreements.

“After carefully reviewing the university’s operational needs and financial viability, we have concluded that certain positions will be affected by redundancy,” the statement read.

Staff affected by the move will receive all benefits as required by law, including severance pay, payment in lieu of notice, accrued leave pay (if any), and other contractual entitlements.

Employees were asked to collect their redundancy letters between May 14 and May 16, 2025, from specified distribution points.

In response, the University Academic Staff Union (UASU) has urged its affected members to submit their employment records, as the union pursues legal action to overturn the layoffs.

UASU had earlier filed a case challenging the university’s downsizing plan in court.
