Mount Kenya University (MKU) and Strathmore University have received recognition as top-ranking institutions in the latest survey.
According to the recent performance assessment report by Webometrics, MKU and Strathmore University stand out as the only private higher education institutions among the top ten in the country.
The University of Nairobi maintains its position as the leading institution in Kenya, with eight public universities dominating the list, including Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT), Kenyatta University (KU), Egerton University, Moi University, Maseno University, Technical University of Nairobi (TUK), and Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST).
In the Webometrics report released last week, Strathmore and MKU are ranked seventh and tenth, respectively.

MKU has also achieved recognition on the global stage this year, earning accolades as a top-performing institution by UNIRANK and EDURANK. It improved its ranking by 19%, moving from position 6,318 to 5,437 out of 32,140 institutions worldwide. In Africa, MKU is positioned at 258 out of over 2,000 universities and has moved from 16th to 10th place in the Kenyan ranking.
Within the sub-Saharan region, MKU has climbed from 177th to 151st among 1,393 colleges surveyed by Webometrics.

Additionally, MKU’s Medical School is recognized as the leading training institution among medical schools in East Africa by the EAC Partner States Medical Practitioners Boards and Councils.
MKU Vice-Chancellor, Prof Deogratius Jaganyi, attributes these achievements to the university’s dedication to enhancing teaching, research, and innovation. He highlights the institution’s research and innovation week as a platform for disseminating research findings and emphasizes the growth of external networks linking to the institution’s webpages as a contributing factor to its improved rankings.
Prof Jaganyi also notes MKU’s advancements in transparency and openness rankings, attributing them to the presence of highly cited researchers and an increase in citations.
