Most businesses within the central business district kept their doors closed early Monday amid growing security concerns.

Anti-riot officers were seen gathering at the Central Police Station before being deployed across various parts of the city, particularly locations considered potential protest hotspots.

Both uniformed and plainclothes officers were also spotted patrolling the Mapembeni area along Moi Avenue, a frequent meeting point for demonstrators.

The Mombasa Mall in Mwembe Tayari was heavily guarded by armed anti-riot police as part of the heightened security measures.

Local authorities have rejected the planned protests, citing safety concerns.

According to Central Police Station OCS Sylvester Wambua, the demonstration has been officially “declined and cancelled.”

“Our intelligence indicates that criminal elements intend to infiltrate the protests to cause chaos, destruction, and looting,” said Wambua.

“Given the need to maintain peace and protect this coastal city, it would be irresponsible to allow the protest to proceed,” he added.

Meanwhile, on Saturday, police detained and questioned activists Bradley Ouna and Evans Momanyo for over six hours over claims they were behind the planned demonstrations.

The two activists, who had formally notified police of the intended protest, denied any allegations of incitement or plans to instigate violence.
