LSK Members Protest Ruto’s Remarks on Judiciary, Declare “Mambo ni Matatu”

Law Society of Kenya (LSK) members are currently staging demonstrations nationwide in response to President William Ruto’s comments about the Judiciary.

While holding placards and dancing in the streets of Nairobi, the lawyers insist that the president should show respect for the judiciary and its authority.

Vocal advocate Ndegwa Njiru, among his fellow lawyers, chanted ‘mambo ni matatu,’ symbolizing three conditions. “Mambo ni mangapi?,” he exclaimed, with other lawyers joining in, saying, “Mambo ni matatu!” in unison. Njiru conveyed, “Mambo ni matatu, heshimu mahakama, heshimu sheria ama uende nyumbani,” loosely translated to “There are three conditions, respect the courts, respect the law, or go home.”

Earlier, Njiru, through his social media account, stated that the march is advocating for the freedom of judicial independence and protection of judicial officers from threats.

LSK President Eric Theuri is leading the march, with Wiper Leader Kalonzo Musyoka also present. Theuri called for peaceful protests, emphasizing solidarity with the judiciary. He urged members to wear purple ribbons throughout the week and participate in peaceful nationwide protests organized by the society to support the rule of law.

“We must not allow our Constitution to suffer dereliction,” Theuri stated, highlighting the crucial role of an independent judiciary.

He pointed out that the same judiciary Ruto is criticizing has nullified a previous presidential election and, at another instance, upheld his own election, emphasizing the vital role of a robust and independent judiciary in fostering national growth, stability, and economic prosperity.
