The deceased—Faith Ndunge Nguma, Jacob Mwanthi King’oo, and Nicholas Omondi Arem—were participating in the election of union representatives when a matatu reportedly lost its brakes and crashed into a group of teachers gathered near the polling venue.

In a condolence message, Kuppet stated, “Our deepest condolences go to the families, relatives, and friends of the teachers who perished during our Nairobi branch elections. We also wish a speedy recovery to those injured and our thoughts remain with the affected school communities.”

Witnesses said the matatu, traveling from Limuru Road towards the CBD, veered off course after brake failure, hitting the teachers and overturning.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba reported that 26 teachers were injured—13 treated and discharged, and 13 admitted to various hospitals in Nairobi.

“The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) will cover all medical bills incurred by the injured,” said TSC national chairperson Jamleck Muturi.

Acting secretary Eveleen Mitei added that three teachers were at Aga Khan Hospital, eight at Nairobi West Hospital, one at Kenyatta National Hospital, and one at AAR Kiambu Road. One teacher at Aga Khan underwent surgery, while two others remain in the High Dependency Unit in stable condition.

Kuppet remembered the deceased as dedicated educators who served their schools with distinction.

Their deaths have intensified concerns over road safety. Police records show that road accidents in January rose by 11%, resulting in 398 fatalities compared to 358 in the same period last year.

The National Police Service recorded 854 accidents in January 2026, slightly up from 850 in January 2025, with 2,032 victims, an 8% increase year-on-year. Pedestrians were the most affected, accounting for 143 deaths, followed by motorcyclists (102), passengers (77), and drivers (38).

Boniface Otieno, Traffic Department liaison officer, said, “We are deeply concerned about the rise in road fatalities and are intensifying enforcement to protect all road users.”

Kuppet concluded, “Our thoughts and prayers are with the colleagues, students, school communities, and families affected by this tragic event. May God grant strength, comfort, and peace during this difficult time.”
