Kirinyaga Landlady Rescued from 45-Foot Pit Latrine

A 60-year-old woman was successfully rescued after falling into a pit latrine in Gitwe village, Kirinyaga County. Rosemary Wangithi Koori, the landlady of the compound which also accommodates Kirinyaga University students, was heard crying from the 45-foot latrine within her premises.

Neighbors responded to her distress calls and promptly alerted the County government, prompting the dispatch of a team of firefighters to the scene.

According to Peter Mwangi, a neighbor, Wangithi remained trapped in the pit latrine for approximately 30 minutes until the arrival of the firefighters.

Chief Fire Officer John Kiama confirmed the successful rescue, stating that Wangithi was immediately taken to Kerugoya Hospital for medical attention due to exposure to human waste.

“Wangithi has been admitted to Kerugoya referral hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment and is reported to be responding well,” Kiama added.

Wangithi, known for renting out her properties to Kirinyaga University students, was questioned about the condition of the facilities. Kiama questioned why Wangithi was utilizing an old mabati toilet when she had the means to construct better facilities on the premises.
