The Kenya Human Rights Commission (KHRC) has filed a petition in court, urging the Kenya National Drama and Film Festival committee to permit Butere Girls’ High School to present their play Echoes of War with the original script, props, and the presence of their director.
KHRC contends that preventing the performance infringes on the students’ rights to freedom of expression, opinion, and access to information.
The commission is also requesting the court to suspend the ongoing festival, which is set to end tomorrow, until the case is heard and resolved.
This petition follows controversy surrounding the play, which is believed to tackle issues of social injustice and government excesses.
The play was allegedly blocked, sparking protests and the tear-gassing of students and journalists.
The government has denied accusations of censorship.
