Kenya’s Singapore Journey Turns Into “Sink Hapo” Disaster

By: Erick Otieno, Laikipia University

The planned trip to Singapore was abruptly halted after funds allocated to the Nairobi County Government for improving drainage systems were reportedly misused.

Instead, attention shifted to what many are now calling “Sink Hapo,” as heavy rains continue to claim lives across Nairobi—the nation’s capital, no less.

Extensive damage has been reported, with high-value properties destroyed and investors suffering significant losses due to the floods. Public transport vehicles have even been swept away, leaving residents jokingly questioning whether owning a car or a boat makes more sense in the city.

The economic impact has been severe. The much-touted Bottom-Up economic model now feels like it’s sinking, as the very people expected to drive growth are being overwhelmed by the disaster.

Year after year, Kenya experiences flooding, yet citizens are often met with the same promises and repeated narratives from leaders—little action, just recycled talk.

It’s time for Kenyans to rise from complacency, register as voters, and make informed decisions at the ballot. The country needs leaders who prioritize the welfare of the people over personal gain.

Civic awareness and a clear understanding of the current situation are more important now than ever.
