Kenya Power has been authorized to proceed with a Sh1.2 billion transformer procurement following a ruling by the Public Procurement Administrative Review Board (PPARB), which dismissed objections raised by two local manufacturers.

The contract, exclusively reserved for local suppliers, involves the delivery of 3,319 distribution transformers.
Empower Transformers Ltd and Nairobi Transformers Manufacturers (E.A.) Co. Ltd had contested the 14-day delivery timeline, arguing it unfairly benefited firms with existing stock and alleging unequal communication during the bidding process.
However, the Board ruled in favor of Kenya Power, citing the urgency of the procurement, public interest, and adequate justification for the delivery requirements.
One of the complaints was dismissed on technical grounds, while the other failed to provide convincing evidence of favoritism.
The ruling paves the way for Kenya Power to move forward with efforts to resolve delays in new electricity connections and transformer replacements—issues that have recently affected service delivery.
