Initial reports indicate that the MP was fatally shot by two armed assailants on a motorbike along Ngong Road, near City Mortuary.
Police said the motive behind the killing remains unclear.
His body was taken to Nairobi Hospital, where it was placed in the emergency area. Several of his colleagues rushed there upon receiving the tragic news.
Among those present at the hospital were DCI boss Mohamed Amin, Nairobi police commander George Seda, and Interior PS Raymond Omollo.
Leaders across the country have expressed shock and grief at the legislator’s sudden death.
Saboti MP Caleb Amisi reflected on his final conversation with Were earlier in the day, noting that Were had confided that things were not going well.
“I was with my colleague this afternoon in Parliament — we laughed and talked. He told me, ‘We need to talk, mambo si mazuri.’ Just five hours later, he’s gone. The news is devastating,” Amisi said.
According to credible sources, the MP was killed while stuck in traffic. He had just left Parliament and was on his way to Mbagathi Road when two men trailing him approached, shattered his car window, and shot him at close range.

Were was first elected to Parliament in 2017 and re-elected in 2022 under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party. He served on the Departmental Committee on Blue Economy and Irrigation.
He held a Bachelor’s and Diploma in Business Management from Mt. Kenya University, as well as a Certificate in Computerised Accounting from Meru University. Before his political career, Were held leadership positions in the private sector.
