In a statement issued by police spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga, the NPS revealed that the MP was gunned down on Wednesday evening along Ngong Road, near the City Mortuary roundabout.

According to verified details from the Nairobi Regional Police Commander, the incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. when a white Toyota Crown, in which Were was a passenger, stopped at a red light at the roundabout.

Eyewitnesses reported that a motorcycle carrying two individuals pulled up beside the vehicle. The passenger on the motorbike walked up to the car, opened fire on the front passenger side, and then quickly fled the scene on the same motorcycle.

The vehicle’s driver and another male occupant, who were unharmed, rushed the wounded MP to Nairobi Hospital, where he was declared dead upon arrival.

“The characteristics of this crime suggest it was both targeted and premeditated,” Muchiri stated.

Senior police officers and detectives visited the crime scene and have launched a comprehensive investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the murder.

Describing the incident as a “senseless and brutal act,” the NPS assured the public of a thorough probe and committed all necessary resources to bring the perpetrators to justice.

“We offer our heartfelt condolences to the family, colleagues in Parliament, constituents, and friends of the late MP,” the police spokesperson said.

Authorities are urging anyone with relevant information to report to the nearest police station, contact law enforcement directly, or use the toll-free numbers 999, 112, or FichuakwaDCI at 0800 722 203.

High-profile officials including DCI boss Mohamed Amin, Nairobi police commander George Seda, and Interior PS Raymond Omollo were seen at Nairobi Hospital following the incident.

The legislator’s death has shocked fellow lawmakers. Saboti MP Caleb Amisi shared a poignant reflection on their last encounter, stating:

“We were together in Parliament earlier that afternoon. We talked and laughed. He told me, ‘I need to talk to you — mambo si mazuri.’ Just five hours later, he was gone.”

Charles Ong’ondo Were was first elected to Parliament in 2017 and retained his seat in 2022 under the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party. He served on the Departmental Committee on Blue Economy and Irrigation.

He held both a Bachelor’s and Diploma in Business Management from Mt. Kenya University, and a Certificate in Computerised Accounting from Meru University. Prior to politics, he held senior roles in the private sector.
