On March 13th, 2024, Makueni witnessed a joyous occasion as 175 individuals successfully completed their journey towards recovery from drug and substance abuse. The transformative event unfolded after an intensive 8-week rehabilitation program administered by the Department of Health Services.
Under the guidance of dedicated psychiatrists from the counseling unit within the health department, these individuals emerged from various forms of addiction.
During the graduation ceremony held at the Mother and Child Hospital in Wote, some participants bravely shared their harrowing accounts of how addiction had devastated their lives, leading to disruptions in work, education, and familial relationships, as well as plunging them into the depths of depression.
The county government, in collaboration with other stakeholders, is committed to supporting the reintegration of these newfound champions into society. Plans are underway to provide ongoing aftercare services aimed at preventing relapses and ensuring sustained recovery.
Deputy Governor Lucy Mulili, who presided over the graduation ceremony, affirmed the county’s dedication to addressing addiction issues by announcing plans to allocate resources for the establishment of a dedicated rehabilitation center.
This initiative aims to extend support to a broader segment of the population grappling with addiction, underscoring the government’s proactive approach to tackling this pressing public health concern.
