Safaricom Loses Ground to Airtel in Voice Market

In the span of three months leading up to December 2023, Airtel Kenya experienced an uptick in its voice market share by one percentage point, taking it from 35 percent to 36 percent, according to data from the Communications Authority of Kenya.

This growth came at the expense of competitors Safaricom and Telkom Kenya. Safaricom’s share decreased from 64 percent to 63.3 percent, while Telkom’s share dropped from one percent to 0.5 percent.

The increase in voice calls during this period, totaling 23.6 billion minutes, was attributed to the extended school break and festive season. Airtel’s intensified competition has contributed to Safaricom’s gradual decline in voice market share over the years.

Safaricom’s voice revenue has been affected due to the popularity of mobile money services. Additionally, Airtel recorded the longest average on-net call duration at 2.8 minutes, followed by Finserve (Equitel) and Safaricom.

Meanwhile, domestic SMS traffic saw a 15.6 percent increase, totaling 14.1 billion messages.
