Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma has urged the government to urgently revamp Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), arguing that Kenya cannot claim its place as a regional and global hub while its main airport remains in poor condition.

Kaluma said the dilapidated state of JKIA undermines the country’s image and weakens its ambitions as a continental gateway. He proposed that the government explore public-private partnerships to modernise the facility, suggesting potential investors such as India’s Adani Group.
“Kenya cannot pride itself as a regional hub without a proper airport,” Kaluma said, stressing that a well-structured PPP would secure national interests while modernising the airport.
His remarks came shortly after President William Ruto, speaking at an NYS pass-out parade in Gilgil, challenged Kenyans to embrace higher standards of vision, ambition, and discipline. Ruto cited Japan’s order, prosperity, and infrastructure as benchmarks Kenya should aspire to match.

The debate over JKIA comes months after President Ruto cancelled a takeover deal with Adani Group in November 2024, citing corruption concerns flagged by local investigators and international partners.
Ruto said he would not allow any investor implicated in graft to run Kenya’s critical infrastructure.
