Kakamega County Set to Transform Waste into Income-Generating Activities

Kakamega County is set to create Material Recovery Centers to facilitate the sorting of waste generated within the county. These centers will focus on segregating various types of waste, including biodegradable, solid, plastics, electronic waste (E-waste), and other forms, ensuring proper disposal.

The biodegradable waste will be recycled in Matawa area to produce organic fertilizer, with plans to establish an organic fertilizer factory in collaboration with Regen Organics. Kakamega’s deputy governor, Ayub Savula, emphasized the adoption of efficient, zero-waste processes for producing high-quality fertilizer.

Non-biodegradable waste, particularly plastic, will be appropriately disposed of in designated dumping sites located on the outskirts of Kakamega town. Savula highlighted the importance of users participating in the disposal of plastic bottles through extended user responsibilities.

The county government has designated every third Friday of the month as a day for monthly clean-up activities, requiring everyone within the county to dedicate an hour from 8 am to clean the environment. As Kakamega prepares to host the African Nations Football Championships in September, protocols will be established to ensure high cleanliness standards in the town and neighboring urban areas.

Savula emphasized that the county’s commitment to cleanliness would enhance its appeal for hosting national and international events and becoming a preferred destination for tourists. Additionally, the county government is collaborating with the county assembly to prioritize the creation of sustainable waste management legislation, fostering an environment conducive to effective waste management.

To further promote waste recovery and income-generating activities, the county government is set to enter into Memoranda of Understanding (MOUs) with special interest groups in waste management. Peninah Mukabane, the County Executive Committee member for Water, Environment, and Natural Resources, reiterated the ban on the use of plastic bags for packaging and warned traders against violations.
