Governor Achani Initiates Upgrade for Kwale’s Sports Venues

Kwale County is set to revamp and enhance its sporting facilities, according to Governor Fatuma Achani.

The county administration aims to uplift sports pavilions, stadiums, athletic tracks, gymnasiums, boxing arenas, swimming pools, and similar venues where the public engages in physical exercise or participates in athletic competitions.

Governor Achani, accompanied by her deputy Chirema Kombo and County Executive Committee Member for Social Services and Talent Management Francisca Kilonzo, stressed the importance of improving sporting facilities to attract more youth to participate in sports activities. The administration is dedicated to deepening sports development through investments in construction and renovation.

Achani highlighted the ongoing construction of the Sh 450 million Kwale County stadium, emphasizing its state-of-the-art features, including a 3,000-seater capacity, football and basketball pitches, changing rooms, a restaurant, an athletics tartan track, medical rooms, washrooms, and floodlights. The stadium is expected to host national and international sporting events.

The governor mentioned the construction of perimeter walls for sports fields in the 20 administrative wards, each with a dais, changing rooms, and sufficient toilets for players and spectators.

She presided over the groundbreaking for the construction of a dais and open terraces at Nyumba Sita and Mvindeni sports fields to boost sports development in the region.

The county plans to build 500-seater rural stadiums equipped with modern amenities to provide a conducive environment for athletes and sports enthusiasts. Professionals will be engaged in the construction, with locals employed for unskilled labor. Governor Achani emphasized that supporting sports through suitable infrastructure will establish Kwale as a potential sporting powerhouse.

She underscored the role of sports in community well-being, promoting physical fitness, mental health, and social integration among youth and the general population. Achani urged youth to embrace sports as a way to avoid drug consumption, substance abuse, and become self-reliant role models in society.
