Rwandan President Paul Kagame has urged Africans to stand against ongoing disrespect from foreign powers and reclaim their dignity through self-respect and independent thinking.

In a national address on Saturday, Kagame challenged the widespread belief that Africans are incapable of making decisions for themselves.

“Some people believe we’re incapable of thinking or acting on our own ideas,” he said, highlighting the daily condescension Africans often face.

While criticizing the external forces that undermine African autonomy, Kagame also turned the spotlight inward, calling on Africans to stop tolerating such treatment.

“You can’t keep blaming outsiders for dictating your path if you keep accepting their instructions without question,” he noted, emphasizing that true change must begin with Africans rejecting imposed narratives of inferiority.

Kagame’s remarks speak to a broader legacy of colonialism and post-independence dependency, where foreign aid and international financial institutions often impose conditions that compromise African sovereignty.

He cited how economic policies from Western powers have sometimes constrained local development, reinforcing dependency instead of encouraging self-sufficiency.

Kagame pointed to Zimbabwe as an example of African resistance. Despite facing heavy sanctions over land reforms, Zimbabwe has continued to assert its right to self-determination, with authorities recently claiming significant economic progress.

The Rwandan leader’s message, however, went beyond critique. He stressed the importance of Africans reclaiming the power to decide their future without waiting for external approval.

“We must stop believing that what is right can only be confirmed by others,” he said, urging the continent to rely on its own wisdom and priorities.

Kagame concluded by calling for a mindset shift—away from seeking validation and toward confident, deliberate action rooted in African identity and agency.
