Junet Mohammed Faces Potential Removal from ODM Leadership

Suna East Member of Parliament Junet Mohammed is at risk of losing his leadership roles within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) party due to his prolonged absence from party activities.

Junet currently holds significant positions within the party, serving as the National Assembly Minority Whip, Director of Campaigns and Parliamentary Affairs, and Azimio Secretary General. His absence from party engagements was a subject of concern during a meeting chaired by ODM party leader Raila Odinga.

The meeting also resulted in the disbandment of the party’s National Elections Board (NEB), which reports to Junet.

Key figures present at the meeting included Raila Odinga, ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna, deputy party leader Wycliffe Oparanya, chairman John Mbadi, and National Assembly Minority Leader Opiyo Wandayi.

In response to Junet’s extended absence, a letter from SG Sifuna has been sent to him, requesting an explanation within the next seven days. The letter highlighted that Junet’s actions have negatively impacted the party by hindering expected contributions from his office toward achieving the party’s goals.

The letter read in part, “Your actions have had, and continue to have, a detrimental impact on the party by depriving it of the expected contributions from your office towards the realization of the party’s goals and objectives. By resolution of the committee, you are required to provide a comprehensive explanation for this state of affairs within the next seven days.”

While Junet acknowledged being aware of the letter, he stated that he had not yet received it. He attributed the situation to certain individuals within the party attempting to settle political scores.

Junet faced accusations from some ODM members of sabotaging Raila Odinga’s election by allegedly failing to place agents at specific polling stations.
