The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has dispatched a Rapid Response Team from its Nairobi Regional Office to investigate the fatal shooting of a 21-year-old student in Huruma, Nairobi County.

In a statement, IPOA Vice Chairperson Ann Wanjiku Mwangi confirmed that investigations had begun into the death of Sheril Adhiambo, who was shot on the evening of February 7, 2026. The incident allegedly occurred as police pursued suspected robbery suspects in the neighbourhood.

Mwangi said IPOA officers are already on the ground collecting evidence, recording witness statements and analysing exhibits to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting.

“IPOA conveys its condolences to the family of Ms Sheril Adhiambo, urges members of the public to remain calm, and assures the family and the public of independent, impartial and thorough investigations to establish accountability,” Mwangi said.

The shooting took place in Huruma’s Ngei I area, where residents reported that Adhiambo was struck by a stray bullet during the police operation. Police are yet to issue a detailed account of how the incident unfolded.

According to residents, the victim was a first-year student at the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC). She had reportedly completed her examinations and was helping her mother at a fish kiosk when she was fatally shot.

Her death triggered outrage among locals, who accused police of using excessive force in a densely populated residential area. Protests erupted on Saturday night and continued into Sunday morning, with residents engaging police in running battles.

During the unrest, at least three vehicles were torched, roads were blocked, and the local police station was vandalised. Buses, business stalls and other property were also set ablaze, paralysing normal activities in the area.

The chaos reportedly provided an opportunity for criminal gangs to loot shops and businesses before security agencies intervened to restore order. Police fired shots in the air to disperse crowds and allow officers to remove Adhiambo’s body from the scene, which residents had initially blocked in protest.

Tension remained high in Huruma on Sunday, with a heavy police presence and continuous patrols as authorities worked to prevent further violence. Many businesses remained closed as residents expressed fear and uncertainty.

Police say they are also conducting internal investigations, but the incident has intensified calls for transparency and accountability in cases involving alleged police misconduct.

People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua has called for a thorough and transparent probe, describing the killing of a young student under such circumstances as deeply disturbing and a stark reminder of the urgent need for reforms in policing, especially during operations in civilian areas.
