Albert Ojwang, a teacher from Voi, was reportedly apprehended on Saturday in Migori town over what officials termed a “derogatory” online statement. He had been visiting relatives when he was detained and later transferred to Nairobi for further interrogation.

Police claim Ojwang died by suicide, allegedly after inflicting head injuries on himself while alone in a holding cell. He was taken to hospital in critical condition but was pronounced dead on arrival.

“He was injured in what appears to be an attempted suicide and was rushed to hospital, where he passed away. He did not die at the police station,” said Nairobi Central Police Commander Stephen Okal.

Ojwang’s body was taken to a mortuary pending a post-mortem. His family has been notified and is expected to attend the autopsy in Nairobi. The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) is set to join the investigation.

This incident occurs amid increased government scrutiny of online activity, particularly targeting users accused of posting inflammatory or politically charged content following recent nationwide protests.
