IGAD Calls for Action to Address Sudan Crisis

Workneh Gebeyehu, the Executive Secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), is urging leaders to move beyond mere promises and focus on practical actions to resolve the crisis in Sudan.

Speaking at the Sudan Humanitarian Assistance Conference in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, Gebeyehu emphasized that concrete interventions are necessary to ease the suffering of the people and achieve a lasting solution.

He highlighted that while these efforts will require financial and material support, effective coordination among all parties involved is essential.

“This conference is more than just an opportunity to show solidarity; it’s a clear call to take action. We must turn our commitments into tangible humanitarian aid, ensuring it reaches those who need it most,” Gebeyehu said. “This requires not only financial and material resources but also improved coordination among humanitarian organizations, host nations, and development partners to enhance the impact of our collective efforts.”

He stressed that these actions should be supported by a dedicated push for peace and stability in Sudan.

Gebeyehu further emphasized that lasting solutions to the crisis can only be achieved through an inclusive political process that addresses the root causes of the conflict. This process should encourage dialogue and lead to a peaceful, democratic, and united Sudan.

“We urge all parties to intensify their efforts toward a negotiated settlement, so Sudan can regain its rightful place in the community of peaceful and prosperous nations,” he added.

He also pointed out that the Sudan crisis is not just a challenge for Sudan but a regional and international issue, with consequences extending beyond its borders. The crisis is putting pressure on neighboring countries, increasing regional instability, and undermining broader peace and development efforts.

“If we do not act decisively, the humanitarian crisis will worsen, with severe consequences for regional security and economic stability. The time for action is now,” Gebeyehu stressed.

His comments followed a statement by Kenyan President William Ruto, who expressed Kenya’s readiness to help facilitate a peaceful resolution between the conflicting parties in collaboration with IGAD.
