Ichung’wah Suggests Reserving Governor Positions Exclusively For Women

Kimani Ichung’wah, the Kikuyu Member of Parliament and National Assembly Majority Leader, has proposed a significant change to the governorship position.

Speaking to a gathering on Tuesday, January 23, 2024, Ichung’wah recommended that the county governor role be exclusively reserved for women.

According to Ichung’wah, implementing this proposal would benefit counties, as he believes that women governors excel in their roles and outperform their male counterparts. “If a day comes when you can change the constitution, I suggest you modify the governor’s seat to be for these women because they understand the governor’s job,” he expressed.

In a recent survey conducted by Infotrak in November of the previous year, several female governors ranked among the top ten best-performing governors in the country. Homa Bay governor Gladys Wanga emerged as the best-performing governor with a 70% approval rating.

Other female governors, including Kawira Mwangaza (Meru), Cecily Mbarire (Embu), Wavinya Ndeti (Machakos), and Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga), also secured notable positions in the rankings.

The survey, conducted in two phases between July and September 2023, involved 36,200 participants in the first phase and 22,500 participants in the second phase.

The objective was to ensure a sufficient sample size, with each subcounty having at least 200 respondents in the second survey.
