The maize, drawn from the National Strategic Grain Reserve, is being distributed through selected depots in the North and South Rift regions at a subsidised rate of Sh4,250 per 90kg bag.

Kagwe said the maize will be allocated to registered millers and miller associations under strict guidelines. To qualify, millers must present their milling capacity, a certificate of incorporation, tax compliance documentation, and a KEBS quality certificate.

Millers are required to pay 25% of their allocation upfront and provide proof of milling and flour distribution before accessing the remaining 75%. A maize utilisation report must also be submitted before the final payment is accepted.

NCPB began accepting payments for the maize on May 22, and sales are expected to pick up from Monday, May 26, 2025. Distribution is already underway from key depots such as Eldoret and Moi’s Bridge.

“All millers must promptly collect, mill, and distribute their consignments upon payment,” Kagwe said.

The move comes amid growing concerns over rising maize prices due to limited supply. In response, the government also authorised the importation of 5.5 million bags of yellow maize to ease demand on white maize, which is also being used for animal feed.
