Gor Mahia Narrowly Avoids Defeat against Nzoia Sugar as City Stars Dominate Murang’a Seal

Gor Mahia staged a remarkable comeback to secure a 3-1 victory against Nzoia Sugar in a match of the Football Kenya Federation Premier League held at Sudi Stadium on Saturday, April 13, 2024. With this win, K’Ogalo extends their lead at the top of the table to nine points, totaling 54 points.

Traditionally considered a challenging opponent for Gor Mahia, Nzoia Sugar initially took the lead, forcing the league leaders to fight hard for their eventual triumph. In the previous season, the encounter between the two teams ended in a 2-2 draw after Nzoia Sugar took the lead, only for Gor Mahia to claw back for a share of the points.

Daniel Simiyu put relegation-threatened Nzoia Sugar ahead, but Shariff Musa equalized for the reigning Premier League champions just before halftime. Gor Mahia displayed a more assertive performance in the second half, taking the lead through a well-crafted play involving Bryson Wangai and Musa. Wangai provided the assist for Musa’s goal, securing Gor Mahia’s advantage.

Shortly after the goal, Wangai was substituted for Christopher Ochieng, while Erick Masika made way for Rodgers Omondi as head coach Johnathan McKinstry opted for a double substitution. Benson Omala sealed the victory for Gor Mahia with a third goal just before the end of regular time, intensifying the pressure on Nzoia Sugar, who are facing relegation.

This victory marks Gor Mahia’s first win in the Premier League since dropping points against Bandari and Kakamega Homeboyz. Gor Mahia suffered a 1-0 defeat against Bandari and managed a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Homeboyz in a tightly contested match in Machakos.

In a separate match, Nairobi City Stars secured a convincing 3-0 win over Murang’a Seal at the Police Pavillion in South C. Japanese forward Yuto Kusaba netted his debut goal in the Premier League from the penalty spot to score City Stars’ third goal. Samuel Kapen was fouled by Ally Yusuf late in the second half, resulting in Seal being reduced to 10 men after Yusuf received a red card.

The first half ended goalless before City Stars broke the deadlock in the 54th minute with Mohammed Bajaber converting from the penalty spot after Kapen was brought down by Samuel Semo. Dennis Oalo doubled City Stars’ lead in the 59th minute following a skillful run by Kapen, who provided the assist.

Elsewhere, Kakamega Homeboyz and Kariobangi Sharks played out a 1-1 draw at Mumias Sports Complex, with Sharks taking the lead through Moses Shikanda in the 22nd minute before Shafiq Batambuze equalized for Homeboyz.
