Chiefs and assistant chiefs in Mandera County will soon be armed to protect themselves from terrorist threats, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced.
Speaking in Mandera town during the Jukwaa La Usalama forum on Monday, Murkomen said administrators exposed to al-Shabaab attacks will undergo firearm training to help them defend themselves while carrying out their duties.

The decision follows a string of militant attacks on local administrators. Since 2015, at least three chiefs have been killed by suspected al-Shabaab fighters. On February 3 this year, five chiefs—four senior and one assistant—were abducted while travelling between Wargadud and Elwak and only freed six months later.
“Our chiefs operate at the grassroots to safeguard communities, and some have paid the ultimate price. Their security is non-negotiable,” Murkomen stated.
He also cautioned administrators against engaging in corruption, especially in issuing national IDs, warning that malpractice could undermine efforts against extremism.
The CS urged stronger collaboration between chiefs and security agencies to address terrorism, clan conflicts over grazing land and water, and rising criminal activity.
He assured residents that the government will continue bolstering security through more police reservists, improved mobility via vehicle leasing, and the use of modern security technology.

Local leaders and residents expressed concerns about terror threats, criminal gangs in Mandera town linked to boda boda operators, and insecurity spilling over from Somalia.

Governor Mohamed Khalif and local MPs called for increased border patrols, more administrative offices, and additional reservists. Khalif affirmed the county’s support for national security agencies in ensuring stability.

Murkomen was accompanied by Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, Deputy IG–APS Gilbert Masengeli, DCI Director Mohamed Amin, GSU Commander Ranson Lolmodooni, and other top officials.
The Jukwaa La Usalama forums continue in Wajir on Tuesday and will conclude in Garissa later this week.
