Kenyan football powerhouse Gor Mahia is set to engage in a friendly match against a team called ‘Nyanza Combined,’ composed of the top talents from the four counties in the larger Nyanza region. This select team emerged from the Eliud Owalo Super Cup tournament, where Homa Bay emerged victorious, defeating Kisumu 4-2 on penalties after a goalless draw. The friendly match, scheduled for Saturday afternoon at Nyilima Sports Ground in Asembo, Siaya County, serves as a warm-up for Gor Mahia ahead of their Kenyan Premier League encounter with Posta Rangers on January 6, 2024.
Cabinet Secretary Eliud Owalo, the tournament sponsor, expressed anticipation for the match, emphasizing its significance in testing Nyanza’s emerging talents against Kenya’s premier football club. He highlighted the tournament’s aim to unveil hidden talents in the region, expressing hope that many of the showcased players would attract opportunities to join prominent local and international teams. Owalo also revealed plans to consider making the tournament an annual event to consistently expose talented youth to local and international football scouts.
In the tournament’s culmination, Homa Bay combined secured a prize of Sh. 400,000, while Kisumu, the runners-up, received Sh. 300,000. Siaya, finishing third, earned Sh. 200,000, and Migori was awarded Sh. 100,000. The select technical committee overseeing the tournament, featuring former Gor Mahia players Tobias ‘Jua Kali’ Ochola, James Goro Oronge, Gerald Omolo ‘Chonjo,’ and Peter Dawo, played a crucial role in identifying the best players throughout the competition.
