The government has introduced a new police unit to support grassroots national administration officials in fulfilling their duties across the country.

The Ministry of Interior and National Administration (MINA) announced on Friday that the new National Government Administration Police Unit (NGAPU) will function under the Administration Police Service (APS).

This unit is designed to address policing deficiencies, especially in rural areas, by strengthening the capacity of National Government Administrative Officers (NGAOs), including chiefs at the local level.
NGAPU will operate from its Nairobi headquarters, with offices at regional, county, sub-county, divisional, and locational levels.
At the launch event, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen disclosed that 6,000 police officers have already been assigned to the unit.
Murkomen praised the Administration Police Service for its crucial role in protecting Kenya’s borders and tackling issues like banditry and cattle rustling.
“NGAPU will provide NGAOs with the necessary security resources to improve government service delivery, enhance public safety, and strengthen multi-agency collaboration,” Murkomen stated.
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja highlighted that the creation of NGAPU demonstrates the National Police Service’s commitment to improving service delivery.
The unit will assist NGAOs with security management, maintain law and order, protect government facilities, enforce national policies, and oversee high-risk operations such as land dispute resolutions, regulatory enforcement, and combating alcohol and drug abuse.
