Gachagua Hands Malala Powerful Role Ahead of 2027 Elections

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has named former Kakamega senator Cleophas Malala to oversee the rollout of the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) 2026 Plan of Action, a move aimed at strengthening the party’s readiness for the next electoral cycle.

Gachagua announced the appointment on Monday, saying the plan was approved following a three-day retreat that brought together party leaders and like-minded legislators.

He said the meeting allowed the party to review the political landscape, align its priorities and agree on a clear roadmap for the year ahead.

“After a three-day retreat with like-minded legislators, we have today ratified the party’s Plan of Action for the year. I have assigned Senator Cleophas Malala the responsibility of leading its implementation on behalf of the party,” Gachagua said.

The Plan of Action outlines DCP’s political, organisational and grassroots strategies as it positions itself for 2026. Although specific details were not made public, the move signals a renewed push to strengthen party structures, improve coordination among elected leaders and energise grassroots mobilisation.

By entrusting Malala with the implementation role, the party is shifting its focus from planning to execution.

Malala is expected to work closely with the party leadership, legislators and regional coordinators to ensure the strategy is effectively rolled out nationwide, monitor progress and report on achievements and challenges.

Gachagua reaffirmed the party’s commitment to democratic values and inclusive leadership, describing the plan as part of a broader effort to build a well-structured political movement ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The former deputy president has previously expressed confidence that DCP, working in coalition with Kalonzo Musyoka’s Wiper party under the United Opposition, will secure the majority of seats in 2027. The alliance is targeting the governorship, the senate, at least 16 of the 17 parliamentary seats, and 75 of the 85 ward seats.

Gachagua also dismissed concerns over recent by-election losses, noting that DCP won three of the five seats in which it fielded candidates.
