Sony Sugar Set to Restart Operations After Major Overhaul

The New South Nyanza Sugar Company Limited (SONY 2025) will restart full milling activities next week following the completion of an extensive maintenance and infrastructure upgrade programme that began in late November 2025.

Speaking to the media, Operations Manager Idris Bashir said the exercise aimed to restore production efficiency and address significant losses experienced at the end of 2025.

The Migori-based mill, currently leased to Busia Sugar Company, underwent comprehensive rehabilitation, including fabrication and refurbishment of critical production units.

“Our two boilers had dropped from a design capacity of 30 tonnes per hour to about 18–19 tonnes due to pressure loss,” Bashir noted, adding that they have now been fully restored to optimal performance.

Key machinery components, including bearings, gears, and mill parts, were replaced or serviced, while crystallizers, preheaters, pans, and centrifugals were repaired to prevent leakages and reduce wastage, ensuring maximum sugar output.

With these upgrades, the factory expects to double its crushing capacity from 1,500 tonnes of cane per day to more than 3,000 tonnes.

The company reaffirmed its commitment to farmers, its primary stakeholders, promising continued weekly payments upon cane delivery.

Bashir also announced the acquisition of 20 new 110-horsepower tractors to enhance cane transport and 20 motorcycles to boost extension services for farmers. He urged farmers to collaborate with extension officers on cane management, soil care, and fertiliser application to improve yields and profitability.

Public Relations Officer Ochieng Mado added that, in addition to plant upgrades, the investor has upgraded the C1 access road from the Awendo–Migori highway junction to bitumen standards, easing logistics and reducing vehicle wear and tear.
