A tragic incident unfolded at a police post in Ndurumo, Rumuruti, Laikipia County, after a police officer shot a 29-year-old man and was later found dead in what authorities believe was linked to a love triangle.
Police said the incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, December 14, 2025. The bodies of Constable Peter Macharia Mwangi and the civilian, Benson Kipkemboi Chirchir, were discovered about 150 metres apart.

At the time, Mwangi was on duty at the Ndurumo patrol base. He reportedly left briefly to buy food from a nearby shop, where Chirchir was playing pool. The officer shot the civilian, who died at the scene.
Mwangi later returned to the police housing area, where he was subsequently found dead. No note was recovered.
Colleagues indicated that the officer had been involved in a dispute with the civilian over a woman in the area, which is believed to have triggered the incident. Police recovered spent cartridges from the scenes, and the firearm involved was found near the officer’s body.

The bodies were taken to the mortuary pending postmortem examinations and further investigations.

Authorities noted that similar cases involving police officers have been increasing, often linked to work-related stress and trauma. Officials say officers frequently face intense pressure as they handle community challenges while risking their own safety.
Health experts have previously pointed to factors such as personal stress, financial strain, substance abuse, mental health conditions and family or social pressures as contributors to such tragedies. The government says measures are ongoing to address the growing concern affecting both officers and members of the public.
