Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has clarified his recent comments regarding the 2027 general elections, saying his words were misinterpreted and that he did not predict post-election violence.

Speaking at Christ’s Joy Christian Church in Ndunyu Chege, Murang’a County, Gachagua explained that he was merely echoing public concerns about the importance of a fair electoral process, not forecasting unrest.
“I never said Kenya will face chaos. What I stated was that Kenyans are worried, and we must avoid any attempt to rig the elections to prevent a repeat of the 2007/08 crisis,” Gachagua said.
He urged the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) to uphold integrity and fairness, emphasizing that contested elections in the past have led to violence.
Gachagua maintained that as a leader, it is his responsibility to speak out when he sees potential threats to national stability. He cited his previous warning against the 2024 Finance Bill, which he claims led to unrest when it was passed.
“Our role as leaders is to raise the alarm when we foresee danger. That doesn’t mean we are promoting conflict — it means we want to prevent it,” he said.
During a May 16 interview on Obinna TV, Gachagua had warned that if the 2027 elections were mismanaged, the fallout could surpass the 2007/08 violence.
“At the current rate, if IEBC bungles the elections, 2007 will look like a Christmas party,” he had stated — comments he now says were taken out of context.
