Peter Okong’o, former Deputy Managing Editor and journalist at Standard Group, has passed away.
His colleagues and friends from various organizations expressed their sorrow upon learning of his death on the morning of October 31.
Okong’o worked at the Mombasa Road media house for over seven years, starting in 2011, before transitioning to a consulting role at the Central Bank of Kenya.
Masoku Geoffrey paid tribute to Okong’o, recalling him as a distinguished gentleman and an excellent editor. “My former colleague at Standard Group, Peter Okong’o, has gone home. He was a fine gentleman and a great editor. Farewell, brother, and my condolences to the family,” Masoku said.
Catherine Riungu and Wilfred Ayaga also honored his memory, particularly noting his contributions to the Kenya Yearbook Editorial Board. “Peter Okong’o, how can it be? Just recently you were pushing the Kenya Yearbook writers with deadlines; your last message to me was, ‘Catherine, we’re not waiting for your flower show, I need those stories today.’ At the NMG business desk, you were always smiling and incredibly supportive of writers. I’ve heard you carried yourself with dignity at SG. Rest well, colleague,” Catherine shared.
Wilfred added, “A good man has passed. Peter Okong’o, a former editor at Standard Group, was kind to me as I found my footing in the newsroom. May you find peace with the Lord, and may your family find comfort.”
