A Kenya Airways flight bound for New York was forced to return to Nairobi after developing a technical fault while flying over Chad.
In a statement, the airline said Flight KQ002D experienced a spoiler system malfunction on Sunday evening, prompting the crew to carry out standard safety procedures before deciding to divert back to Nairobi for further inspection.

The airline said the issue was detected at about 7:50 pm during the journey from Nairobi to New York. Following established aviation safety protocols, the pilots opted to return the aircraft as a precaution.
“The safety of our guests and crew remains our highest priority. After conducting precautionary safety checks, the crew elected to return to Nairobi to allow our technical teams to carry out further evaluation,” Kenya Airways said.
The aircraft was expected to land safely in Nairobi at around 12:30 am. Kenya Airways reassured passengers that every decision made during the flight was guided by safety considerations.
The airline also apologized for the disruption and said affected travellers would be accommodated on the next available flights.
Kenya Airways noted that although spoiler malfunctions are uncommon, they are recognised technical issues that pilots are trained to manage safely. Such faults may increase drag and fuel consumption but do not prevent the aircraft from being operated safely under established procedures.
The incident underscores the aviation industry’s commitment to safety, with precautionary turnbacks forming part of standard operating procedures whenever technical concerns arise during a flight.
The aircraft will undergo a thorough inspection and technical assessment before being cleared to resume service.
