EATTA Warns Nandi Producers Against Buying Tea from Hawkers

The East African Tea Trade Association (EATTA) has cautioned tea producers in Nandi against purchasing tea leaves from hawkers following a rise in illegal plucking at Sitoi Tea Estate, which is managed by Eastern Produce Kenya Limited.

In a statement, the association’s Managing Director, George Amuga, urged factories and industry stakeholders to adhere to Tea Regulations, which strictly forbid hawking and the purchase of green leaves from unauthorized sources.

“The Secretariat has been informed of the resurgence of illegal plucking activities at Sitoi Tea Estate. This issue had been previously raised by Eastern Produce and was believed to have been addressed,” he said.

The managing director highlighted that EATTA would take action against any member involved in acquiring green leaves from Sitoi Tea Estate or engaging in any non-compliant activities.

“EATTA stresses the need for vigilance in tackling this issue. In line with our commitment to upholding industry standards, we will take strong action, including immediate suspension,” he stated.

EATTA members have been urged to support efforts to resolve the matter by avoiding the purchase of tea leaves brought by hawkers associated with this estate, reporting suspicious activities to both authorities and EATTA, and cooperating with Eastern Produce Kenya Ltd. in protecting their operations and assets.

“We trust that all members will act responsibly to preserve the integrity of the tea supply chain. Thank you for your continued commitment to upholding the values of our association,” he added.
