DPP Orders DCI to Investigate Singer Betty Bayo’s Death

The Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has instructed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to launch an investigation into the death of gospel singer Betty Bayo, whose real name was Beatrice Wairimu Mbugua.

In a letter sent to the DCI on Tuesday, the DPP directed that the findings of the probe be submitted to prosecutors within seven days.

The directive follows a request from Bayo’s mother, Joyce Wairimu, who on December 9 asked the DPP to open an inquest into her daughter’s death.

Bayo passed away on November 10, 2025, at Kenyatta National Hospital, where the family stated she had been receiving treatment. A family spokesperson, along with the singer’s husband, Hiram Gitau, said she died from leukaemia.

However, Wairimu told the DPP that the family suspects foul play in the death of the 11th Hour hitmaker. She claimed that Bayo had shown no prior signs of illness and that her death was mysterious.

Wairimu also alleged that the family was denied the autopsy report and that Bayo was buried hastily to hide potential details about the cause of death.

Additionally, Wairimu accused hospital authorities of withholding medical records and information about the treatment her daughter was receiving before her passing.
