Malawi’s President, Lazarus Chakwera, has declared a 21-day mourning period starting Tuesday to honor Vice President Saulos Chilima, who tragically lost his life in a plane crash on Monday.

Chakwera has also ordered that all flags be flown at half-mast during this period of mourning. Details regarding funeral arrangements will be communicated soon, according to a statement by Secretary to the President and Cabinet, Colleen Zamba.
Chilima, along with nine other officials, perished in a military plane crash near Chikangawa, Mzimba. The Malawian Defence Force reported that the aircraft disappeared from radar after departing from Lilongwe on Monday morning. Despite its scheduled landing at Mzuzu International Airport at 10:02 am, the plane failed to arrive.
Chilima assumed the role of Vice President on May 30, 2014, and was sworn in for his second term on June 28, 2020.
Notably, he was the first Malawian to lead Airtel Malawi, the prominent mobile telecommunications company in the region.
Prior to his telecommunications career, he held significant sales and marketing positions in the banking sector and major consumer goods companies such as the Leasing and Finance Company, Unilever Malawi, Coca-Cola, and Carlsberg.
Chilima, survived by his spouse and two children, leaves behind a legacy of service and accomplishment.
