CS Peninah Malonza Unveils Initiative to Expand Leather Industry in Narok

The Ministry of East African Community (EAC) Affairs, under the leadership of Cabinet Secretary Peninah Malonza, has launched a project aimed at revamping and enlarging the Ewaso Ngiro Tannery and Leather Factory in Narok County. The objective is to enhance the processing of leather goods within the country while simultaneously generating more job opportunities.

During a visit to the factory, CS Malonza announced plans to introduce new machinery to bolster production capacity. “For quite some time, hides and skins have been underutilized, but with this factory, we aim to harness these resources within the region,” she stated.

“We are currently in the process of expanding the factory. What’s particularly exciting is that a single hide can yield over 45 pairs of shoes, highlighting the economic significance of maximizing this raw material,” CS Malonza added.

Once fully operational, the factory is projected to create 500 direct job opportunities and over 5000 indirect employment opportunities.

“We envision producing footwear for our security personnel and schoolchildren, tapping into a substantial market,” Malonza remarked.

Established over a decade ago through collaboration between the national government and Narok County, the multimillion-dollar factory utilizes hides and skins for leather production. Its overarching goal is to support the livelihoods of small-scale hides and skin traders in Narok and neighboring counties such as Kajiado and Samburu.
