This was the focus of discussions during a meeting between Agriculture CS Mutahi Kagwe and a delegation of Iranian businesses.
“The talks also explored broader trade opportunities, not just with Iran, but across the Middle East and Central Asia,” stated the CS.
Reopening Iran’s market could significantly benefit tea farmers and the entire tea value chain, Kagwe added.
The export ban has been a challenge due to U.S. sanctions, which have complicated payment transactions with Iran, causing many traders to avoid the market.
Accompanying CS Kagwe at the meeting were Ambassador Kenneth Milimo Nganga, KTDA Chairman Chege Kirundi, and CEO Wilson Muthaura.
Kenya’s tea export volumes surged by 20.8% in the first ten months of 2024, reaching 500.8 million kg and generating Sh155 billion, according to the Tea Board of Kenya.
