CS Barasa Praises Efficient Functioning of SHA, Encourages More Kenyans to Register

Health Cabinet Secretary Deborah Barasa has praised the Social Health Insurance Fund (SHIF) for operating effectively.

Speaking at a church service in Kakamega on Sunday, she urged more Kenyans to sign up for the scheme to ensure they don’t miss out on its benefits.

Barasa highlighted the Ministry’s successful assessment of the Social Health Authority (SHA) rollout in hospitals nationwide and encouraged those who haven’t registered to do so in order to access the health benefits.

“I’ve visited several hospitals, including Kenyatta University Teaching and Referral Hospital and Pumwani Hospital, and I can confirm that the Social Health Authority is functioning well. I urge all Kenyans to register and see the benefits for themselves,” she said.

On November 5, 2024, the Ministry of Health launched a multidisciplinary evaluation to assess the effectiveness and operational challenges of the SHA across public health facilities. The assessment, led by the Kenya Health Professions Oversight Authority (KHPOA), is aimed at ensuring facilities can provide high-quality services and improve overall healthcare outcomes for the public.

Barasa also announced plans for a nationwide fact-finding mission across Kenya’s 47 counties to evaluate the effectiveness of SHA implementation in public health centers.

She emphasized the need for collaborative efforts, calling on the media and other stakeholders to work together to promote SHA registration. “How can we work together to ensure Kenyans register for SHA and experience better healthcare?” she asked.

The CS reiterated the government’s commitment to providing accessible and quality healthcare for all Kenyans, stating that primary healthcare services will be available at Level 4 hospitals as awareness of the scheme grows.

“The Ministry of Health urges all Kenyans to register for the Social Health Authority (SHA) as part of our broader agenda to ensure quality healthcare is available without financial barriers,” Barasa concluded.
