On Tuesday, Sports Cabinet Secretary Ababu Namwamba inaugurated the inaugural athletes’ training camp in Isiolo County as part of the Talanta Hela Program. The launch marks a significant step in the Ministry of Sports’ broader initiative to foster grassroots athletics development, establishing the first-ever talent development center in the northern region of Kenya at Kinna Primary School in Garbatula Sub-County.
During the launch, CS Namwamba reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to providing financial support to the camp and announced plans to enhance stadium infrastructure within the region. Encouraging local athletes, he emphasized their potential to compete at a high level and draw parallels with renowned athletes from similar genetic backgrounds, citing the Oromos of Ethiopia.
Namwamba expressed determination to elevate the camp, ensuring proper stadium infrastructure development and providing financial support to athletes. Additionally, he advocated for the integration of other sports in the region, urging residents to embrace activities like football.
The Isiolo camp represents the second project under the Talanta Hela Program, following the Chepkemel camp in Uasin Gishu County. Athletics Kenya, in collaboration with the Ministry of Sports, aims to establish over 42 camps nationwide to further develop and nurture athletic talent.
