Kamau Githinji, who has been driving for Climax Coach for eight years, said the incident happened early in the morning as he was travelling from Nairobi to Busia with 65 passengers on board.
Githinji explained that as he was driving along the highway, a Mercedes-Benz suddenly joined the road from a petrol station without giving way.
He said traffic congestion on the other side appeared to influence the Mercedes driver’s decision to move into his lane, resulting in a head-on collision.

According to Githinji, he briefly considered swerving to avoid the crash but realised that doing so could have caused the bus to lose control and endangered the lives of his passengers.
He said he later learned, after police arrived at the scene, that the driver of the Mercedes-Benz was former MP Cyrus Jirongo.
Githinji expressed his sympathies to Jirongo’s family following the tragic incident.

Police confirmed that Jirongo, a well-known political figure and former Lugari MP, died at the scene. His passing has sparked widespread condolences from political leaders, trade unions and members of the public across the country.
