The funeral service for the late Kasipul MP Ong’ondo Were is currently taking place at Karabok Primary School in Homa Bay County, drawing thousands of mourners and numerous political leaders.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula is among the dignitaries already present, with former Prime Minister Raila Odinga expected to arrive shortly.
Were was fatally shot on April 30, 2025, near City Mortuary along Ngong Road by a lone gunman on a motorcycle, who fled immediately after the incident. Police have since apprehended and charged ten suspects linked to the killing.
Following the service, the MP will be buried at his ancestral home in Kachien, where a night vigil was held on the eve of the funeral, Friday, May 9.
On Thursday, May 8, large crowds gathered in Oyugis, Homa Bay County, to receive Were’s body. Normal business was disrupted along the route from Kabunde Airstrip as a massive funeral convoy moved through key towns including Homa Bay, Kendu Bay, Kadongo, Sikri, and Oyugis. The procession was led by Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, accompanied by several MPs and political figures, including Homa Bay Town MP Peter Kaluma.
Governor Wanga expressed collective grief on behalf of the ODM party, calling for divine comfort during this difficult time.
That same day, police reported significant progress in their investigation into the MP’s murder. The body was later brought to Agoro Sare Primary School, where residents lined up in large numbers to pay their respects, under tight security.
Due to the large turnout, the burial service is being held at the Karabok Primary School grounds to accommodate the crowd, which includes leaders from various political affiliations.
