Kinyagia, who had been reported missing from his home in Kinoo, Kiambu County on June 22, resurfaced Thursday morning, appearing before the High Court in Milimani. He claimed he had been in hiding to evade arrest.

Mwangi expressed outrage over the incident, condemning Kinyagia’s actions as dishonest and criminal, arguing that the public had been manipulated into believing he had been abducted.

“What Ndiangui has done is unacceptable and criminal. The entire country was calling for his release, praying for his safety, believing he had been kidnapped, only for it to emerge that he was hiding all along. Shame on him and his family for deceiving an entire nation. Kasongo Yeye!” Mwangi wrote on X.

Kinyagia’s disappearance had sparked widespread concern, with neighbours informing the Law Society of Kenya (LSK) that he had allegedly been taken by men believed to be security officers. The LSK subsequently filed a habeas corpus petition, prompting the High Court to direct the Inspector-General of Police to produce him, dead or alive.

However, the narrative changed on Tuesday evening when Kinyagia contacted his family, revealing he was alive and in hiding due to fear of arrest over unspecified allegations.

Family lawyer Wahome Thuku confirmed the development, stating that Kinyagia had gone into hiding after learning he was wanted by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI). Thuku added that they had advised him to appear in court, which he did on Thursday.

DCI Director Mohammed Amin later clarified that Kinyagia was being sought in connection with a viral social media post calling for a mock protest march to State House and the formation of a “transition council.” Amin insisted that police had not detained him but had only searched his residence and seized electronics.

Despite the legal developments, Mwangi remained firm in his criticism, accusing Kinyagia’s family of misleading institutions like the LSK and wasting public resources.

“The family deceived the LSK into filing a habeas corpus, knowing he was in hiding. Such actions are disgraceful and unacceptable,” Mwangi asserted.

The incident has sparked a broader public debate on the responsibilities of activists, the integrity of public campaigns, and the fine line between fleeing for personal safety and intentionally deceiving the public.
