Atwoli Criticizes Gachagua for Contradictory Statements on Ruto

Francis Atwoli, Secretary General of the Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU), has criticized Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua for his contradictory statements about President William Ruto, who is currently in the U.S. for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Atwoli argued that Gachagua is exploiting Ruto’s absence to engage in political maneuvering instead of supporting government initiatives. “The Deputy President is in campaign mode, misleading the nation. You can’t contradict government policies and your own president,” he said.

Over the weekend, Gachagua urged Ruto to uphold his promise not to allow his deputy to be “humiliated,” referencing an ongoing impeachment motion against him. Gachagua also claimed that those pushing for his impeachment have been bribing lawmakers and mentioned that he is seeking new political allies as a potential exit strategy.

He acknowledged that Ruto could easily gather enough votes in the National Assembly to facilitate his impeachment.

“We respect President Ruto and will continue to do so. However, we are looking for new friends because we don’t want the Mount Kenya people to be left alone,” he stated.

Gachagua’s situation worsened on September 23, when Tana River Senator Danson Mungatana filed a censure motion against him, further isolating him within the government.
