The Kenya Meteorological Department advises Kenyans to prepare for notably high daytime temperatures across most regions of the country starting from Tuesday.
The forecast spanning February 20 to February 26 indicates temperatures exceeding 30°C in counties such as Turkana, Samburu, Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Isiolo, Garissa, and Tana River.
Additionally, Lamu, Kilifi, Mombasa, Kwale, Taita Taveta, Kajiado, Makueni, Kitui, Machakos, Nairobi, Kiambu, Embu, Laikipia, and Baringo are expected to encounter average maximum temperatures surpassing 30°C.
However, certain areas including parts of Meru, Tharaka Nithi, Murang’a, Nyeri, Nyandarua, Nakuru, Elgeyo Marakwet, Trans Nzoia, and West Pokot are likely to experience average maximum temperatures below 25°C.
Kenya has observed heightened daytime and nighttime temperatures since the heavy rainfall associated with the El Nino phenomenon subsided late last year.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) recently declared this year’s January as the warmest on record globally.
According to a statement released on February 15, the WMO reported that sea surface temperatures have remained exceptionally high for ten consecutive months.
“It exceeded the 1991-2020 average by 0.70°C for January and was 0.12°C higher than the previous warmest January in 2020, as per the Copernicus Climate Change Service,” stated the UN meteorological agency.
